Shipwreck at KLEPP

The mystery of the last stopover

"We tried for a long time to find the name Grundfjord with the help of naval historians affiliated with museums and institutes at the University of Bergen. Without success. The account of the shipwreck states that the schooner was accompanied by pilots from Bergen. There is a place called GRUNDFJORD located 40 km north of Bergen. This place is called Grundesund in FESTE.

I think this is the right place. But there should probably be a note on the site indicating that this is not 100% certain.

And there is another question concerning La Blanche Marguerite's stay in Grundesund/Grundfjord. In the account given by the survivors, it is said that La Blanche Marguerite arrived in Grundfjord on 17 September, but La Blanche Marguerite remained in Grundfjord until 26 September. The account does not say why they stayed there so long. Did they have to repair the sails or the hull? Or was it as simple as waiting for the right wind to sail to Gothenburg?

By the time I started working with La Blanche Marguerite, Tore Refve had already gathered a lot of information. I would particularly like to refer to the naval declaration he managed to find in the Rogaland county archives (Stavanger/Jæren/Reve/Orre is in Rogaland county).

I would also like to mention Captain Andre Corlay, Jean-Marc Beaude's father-in-law, who lived in Quiberon. He helped us conduct research in the Naval Archives in Lorient. He also created the map showing the route taken by La Blanche Marguerite." Niels Egil GRUDE September 2025
